Profile

About Me:
The Mississippi Marvel is the latest artist signed to Broke & Hungry Records, an independent label dedicated to recording and promoting the best in old-school Mississippi blues.

The Mississippi Marvel's true identity is a closely guarded secret.

Like countless bluesmen before him, he has lived a life steeped in two separate and opposing traditions: The reckless abandon of a juke joint on Saturday night, and the healing redemption of church on Sunday. And like many of those earlier bluesmen, this artist has never reconciled these two warring factions of his identity.

Although he still occasionally turns up at his neighborhood juke, the artist today devotes more attention to his local church community. And like many conservative black churches in the South, his still regards blues music as something shameful, even sinful.

Fearing the rejection of this community, the artist steadfastly refuses to release any music under his own name. And so, the Legend of the Mississippi Marvel is born.

"The World Must Never Know," the Marvel's debut CD will be released by Broke & Hungry Records in April 2008. The Mississippi Marvel’s voice is an instrument of incomparable intensity, full of power and fury. His rich vibrato recalls some of the region’s most legendary singers. His guitar playing is all jagged lines and ragged, funky rhythm, played with aggression rather than grace.

Well, we still don't know who you are, but we know you're the real deal now! One of the more unique performances I'll ever see, and the music is incredible. I hope I get the chance to 'see' you play sometime again soon. As for the CD, if it had grooves, I would wear them out.

Wow!! The Mississippi Marvel appearance was truly the high point of the JJF for me! That is some of the purest old-school Mississippi Blues people can hear these days. I heard it at Sarah's Kitchen and listened to the CD most of the ride home.

Hey Mr. Marvel.I can relate to you because I am an ordained minister who is also a bluesman.I have had a few problems with church folk, but I tell them"If the Blues tells The truth,it is not from the devil ,but from the LORD; to Me the Blues asks Life's questions but the Gospel of Jesus Christ is THE ANSWER! So both gospel and blues goes together!
