About Me:
Like Capt. Beefheart, I believe the blues has been perfected and cannot be improved upon, only re-hashed and preserved. However, what you can do with it is open to immense possibilities. I've had a sound in my head for years of a blues/rock-based mix of international and medieval musics. I play harmonica and hurdy-gurdy, dabble on dulcimer, fiddle, mandolin. I found a kindred spirit, thank God, living just down the street of all places, and he plays guitar. A golf buddy who's out of commission from Jan.-April each year gives us a hand on second guitar every other time. We do mostly instrumentals like ragas, "Peter Gunn" and a John Lee Hooker type piece that throws in several themes from Beethoven. We're slowly working the 'gurdy into our sound and have tunes posted for that--history's first ever hurdy-gurdy blues? If anyone has any suggested songs that may sound cool with this combination, we're all ears. Actually, we're all Earwigs...the name of our project.
Favorite Artists and Bands
The Walters (Little and Horton), Butterfield, Musselwhite, Muddy and anyone else on Chess. Richard Thompson, Blowzabella, Anggun, Hetty Koes Endang, any other female Indonesian singer. The usual 60s stuff--Stones, Yardbirds. Anything up to about 1990--Pixies were the last great band then it's been dreadful since.

The Other Earwigs

The other Earwigs consist of two guitarists: The Barrister (Rick) is influenced by Duane Allman, Rory Gallagher, Steve Howe, Rocky Athas, Johnny A, and Eric Clapton. The Taxman (Bert) is also influenced by Clapton, plus Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Billy Gibbons, Laurie Wisefield, Roy Buchanan and Randy California...he also dabbles on lap steel. Anything to go beyond standard gtr-bs-drms lineup, we'll be all in favor of.

Enjoyed On the Road Again. Funny because I added that song to my set list this year.

The Hurdy/Gurdy definitely added a erthreal tone. My version is a live solo cut.

Hello Will,
not quite what I ment, but I like your ideas, next time I record I want to sing over some different sounds entwined with slide and harp. The Scots blues was really about, the old songs of oppression and hard times ,many of the old laments lend to being sung using a folk/blues style of approach.sutch as Mac Phersons Rant .3rd track on my page.I have recently written a minor blues played with slide ,the song is all about emmigration to Australia, about the emotions of leaving behind family and friends.the fears of the unknown. The words come from a Scots /Irish perspective, the music very much influenced by American blues.
Cheers Roddy

We have a gig scheduled for 7-26-08, Bill's Records, 1317 S. Lamar in Dallas. This is a Saturday afternoon series of live music hosted by KHYI radio. Earwigs slot is 2.30-3.15 pm. Bill's is next door to Poor David's --both of them relocated to this area of town in the last year or so. If you're in Dallas stop by....

G,Day Will,
interesting stuff,I sing some trad Scots /Irish music with my own interpretation, playing electric slide with bass and drums on songs that were originally unacompanied vocal .comments recieved range from brilliant to sacrilage,
On the other hand,my original music does not get the same negative comments, even from some of the so called purists.
In one CD review I had recently my own materiel was praised, then I was knocked for including a standard with the comment do we really need another version of St.James Infirmary.( 8 original & 2 trad tracks on CD) then the reviewer praised the Scots trad tune !! crazy or what.
We cant please everybody.some days you just cant win.
Just keep doing your own thing.

Our version of the old Canned Heat chestnut "On The Road Again" may well be the first blues/blues-infected track in history to feature a hurdy gurdy. We have more tunes coming with this ancient instrument. If anyone beat us to it, please advise...we want to hear what they did!

Anyone who lives in DFW (that's Dallas-Ft Worth for non-locals) or who'll be around here May 9, we'll be performing at White Rhino Coffeehouse in Cedar Hill. Address: 230 W. Beltline--about 2 blks w. of the US Hwy 67 Beltline exit. Additional parking at the library two door east. Bring back the coffeehouse! It worked for Bob Dylan and dozens of other folk artists 50 years ago, time to do it again....
