Toronto Star: The House of Blues

Fantastic article in the Toronto Star. Here's the lead: GRAVENHURST–Ontario's cottage country is a far cry from Chicago's gritty south side. But those worlds are closer than you think, thanks to the passion of a Gravenhurst man whose makeshift theatre inside his garage is home to blues at its best. The theatre, such as it is, occupies an attached garage on Gravenhurst's main drag, where tiered seating and a small stage fill… Continue

Mariela Moscoso's Crossroads photographs...

Scenes from a day spent at Crossroads, courtesy of Mariela Moscoso, who, incidentally, is the loveliest photographer I know...

Details on these shots, from top to bottom: Clapton and Sheryl Crow share the microphone on "Tulsa Time"; Willie Nelson, who ran through some of his biggest hits, including "On the Road Again"; Los Lobos, a band that demonstrated the difference between festival-style all-star ensembles and seasoned musicians who have played together for more than t

Johnny at Crossroads: What the pundits are saying...

winter trucks SO WHO WAS the biggest surprise at this year's Crossroads Guitar Festival? According to Jeff Johnson of the Chicago Sun-Times, it was none other than Johnny Winter:

"The Great White Wonder had to be led onstage, but once he plugged in

UPDATE: Johnny Winter catches fire at Crossroads...

Picture 003

Saturday's Crossroads Guitar Festival was a fantastic day for Johnny. He took to the stage for a roaring (and unrehearsed!) take on "Highway 61" backed by the Derek Trucks Band, and the nearly 30,000 fans in attendance at Toyota Park in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview, Illinois, roared their approval. It was indeed an electrifying moment.

Friday dinner in Chicago...

Had a great meal at a Thai restaurant on the north side of Chicago. My wife Mariela and I were in great company: We were joined by Alligator Records boss Bruce Iglauer, who is graciously hosting us this weekend in the Windy City; Chicago bluesman Lurrie Bell, who is one of the city's A-list guitarists and the son of the late harmonica virtuoso Carey Bell; Jim Pugh, who has played keyboards in Rober… Continue

I saw Johnny Winter last fall at the Birchmere in Virginia and he was tremendous. His bandmates are also extraordinary musicians. "Still Alive and Well", "And", and other periods of his music were huge influences on my playing. One of the truly great blues artists. -- Phil
