I have always been a fan of ZZ Top and the playing of the Rev. Billy F. Gibbons. I must admit that in the late 80s I got a little confused with the dance enhanced songs. Still, there was Billy's guitar fuzzing away and sounding chunky as ever. I guess I was never a fan of the beat or the use of a drum machine along with real drums. This weekend I was at my local Wal-Mart picking up some much needed cough drops and I had to go get my son out of the electronics department. Seems he had found the Guitar Hero demo available and wanted to show his stuff on expert mode. While I was waiting on him to finish his round, I started looking at the dvds and found the new ZZ Top Live from Texas dvd. I decided that for $10.00, a live concert of ZZ would be a good to watch while I was laying around sick. Well, let me tell you......this dvd kicks booty!!!! They played some of the old blues tunes and those "disco-dance" songs I mentioned I didn't like.......they changed my mind! With it basic and stripped down, songs like "Legs", "Sharp Dressed Man" & "Gimme All Your Lovin'" took on a whole new sound. There were some samples in the mix but they were far enough back in the mix not to cover up what was going on by the band. Billy,Dusty & Frank deliver a solid performance on this dvd and the bonus features are really cool too. Especially when they talk about meeting Muddy Waters and other blues masters. These guys love the blues and they are deep in it. I went back and dug out my old ZZ Top cds and have been seriously listening and the influences are there with neat twists and funky changes. That "Lil' 'Ol Band from Texas" is still making a mighty big sound...and that is the sound of some real blues with hot sauce on top!! Go get yourself a copy of this dvd and check it out!
