The Medicine Show On The Road.
The Global Village Medicine Show is our internet and community roots radio show. The Idea is we support independently minded musicians with airplay publicity and tour support. www.themedicineshow.eu
To that end we've kept a listening room trail open in the Highlands for the songsters, for 20 years, and regularly take The Medicine Show On The Road which has particularly become popular with American roots musicians, its become a bit of a pilgrimage for artist wishing to trace the roots of their music back to the homeland. All of these musicians have played and supported House Concerts in the states for many years and I became fascinated by the idea as a result. We now augment our listening room Highland Tours with two very fine House Concerts Square Wheels House Concerts with Steve and Clancy MacDonald in Strathpeffer and The Dunnet Head Light House Concert on the most northerly point of the UK mainland (beats John O Groats by a couple of miles)
Its is my hope that we can between us organise a House Concert network that can cover the UK (does anyone know someone in Lands End with a big front room) Ireland and mainland europe.
We take The Medicine Show On The Road, around the UK Ireland and on to the continent and have played other House Concerts along the trail, my hope for this community is Artists audiences and host can network, IE if I'm in Manchester I might be able to find a house concert to go to and meet like minded people, an artist might be able to fill some dates to make a tour more feasible, and a host will find all the help they need hear to develop their own scene to its maximum.
Do you fancy doing a house concert but don't have a front room big enough?
Perhaps your local pub has a room that would work or you have a long suffering friend who has a bigger house who loves music too.
I fall into both these categories, Ann and I have hosted house concerts here at the Medicine Maisonette, nice as it is, it is just a tad to small for every-ones comfort, so we do ours at The Riverside Tavern in Conon. (under the name of Monday Night Medicine Shows, its good to put a name on them so people identify with your taste in music) This has the bonus of helping your favourite hostelry or venue have an other busy night, they then can be persuaded to contribute to the artists purse too, as do all who attend and the artists cuts costs by staying with the host and you get the chance of a one to one with some-one who's music you admire IE you get to ask what the cords are for a particular song what tunings they might be using, what's his/her favourite whiskey is and do they want and other one? That sort of thing.
An other good tip is to try them out on Mondays and Tuesdays, these are hard days to fill for artists so you will be more likely to attract bigger names. If your palls are all into the odd social mid week get together, then some strategic net stocking and myspace/house concert hub spamming could very well attract your favourite artists to stop over at your place instead of pay out for hotel accom, and you hospitality and friends generosity will help balance the tour books and could help it stay in the black, it can be that close sometimes.
So please send this to any house concerts or good going acoustic music listening room clubs you might know or played, or simply send it to your friend with the biggest front room and say "what do you think"?
