Appearances scheduled in Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York
(ST. LOUIS) – One of today’s most celebrated rural blues artists embarks on a brief tour this month. Jimmy “Duck” Holmes of Bentonia, Mississippi, will kick off the tour at the annual Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi on Saturday, April 17 before traveling to St. Louis (MO), Columbus (OH), Harrisburg (PA) and New York’s West Village (NY).
Holmes has risen to international attention in recent years for his haunting approach to acoustic blues. The 62-year-old has released four critically acclaimed CDs in the past decade, including three for St. Louis-based Broke & Hungry Records. The albums have garnered widespread acclaim and have received multiple awards. Holmes also appeared in the award-winning 2008 documentary M For Mississippi: A Road Trip Through the Birthplace of the Blues. That same year Holmes also was profiled on Good Morning America.
In addition to performing blues, Holmes is the owner of the Blue Front Cafe, the oldest operating juke joint in Mississippi. The rustic venue has played host to a number of rural blues artists through the years, including Holmes’ musical mentor Jack Owens who died in 1997 at the age of 92. Owens and the Blue Front Cafe were featured in a Levi’s commercial in the mid-1990s. The small, cinder-block structure attracts visitors from around the globe each year. The State of Mississippi recently designated the venue as an official stop on its Mississippi Blues Trail.
Holmes’ tour dates include:
