Music Maker Relief Foundation

Music Maker lets you directly help struggling musicians

Music Maker Relief Foundation, a nonprofit that works with elderly and impoverished Southern musicians, is finding creative ways to encourage charitable giving during this tough economic climate.

Recent changes in the music industry have affected all musicians, especially roots musicians living in poverty. It has always been difficult for these artists to fit into the industry; however, as new ways to consume music emerge, this difficulty increases. Fortunately, Music Maker’s programs exist to help struggling roots musicians by providing the public with a direct link to these artists.

“With the support of music lovers, MMRF can keep roots musicians working to survive this difficult economy,” Denise Duffy, MMRF founder said. “Our organization bridges the gap between these fans and our musicians so that this genre of music is promoted and documented.”

Unlike other organizations in the industry, donations to Music Maker go straight to the artists, assisting them with sustenance, musical development and cultural access. Currently, Music Maker’s programs are more important than ever before which means donations to the Foundation are in need now, more than ever before.

Each holiday season, Music Maker offers, through gift giving, an opportunity to support the Foundation’s mission. This year, the gift premiums feature artwork that provides a window to the amazing musicians who inspire the Foundation’s work.

The artwork presented in Music Maker’s holiday gifts is an example of how donations to Music Maker’s programs result in art that will not only inspire others but will be preserved for future generations.

These unique gift giving options include: a 2010 calendar consisting of comics written and drawn by artists Harvey Pekar (author of American Splendor) and Gary Dumm; a Guitar Gabriel CD that illuminates the Blues genius who inspired the founding of Music Maker; Toot Blues, a feature length documentary that depicts the Music Maker journey; and entry into the Givin’ it Back Record Club which includes four new CD releases throughout the year beginning with Etta Baker Banjo.

“We’re proud to have worked with Music Maker on the 2010 calendar,” Dumm said. “Even if you can't play a lick of music, knowing that you've helped musicians who otherwise might have been silenced, to play and sing their songs may be the sweetest sounding and best music of all.”
