Gaye Adegbalola, internationally known for performing both with Saffire-Uppity Blues Women and in a duo with pianist Roddy Barnes, has weighed in on "Blues Gonna Show the Way," my CD. Gaye, a W.C. Handy award-winning songwriter, writes:

"I've always said that gospel music mainly tells a story about salvation later on, while blues music is about salvation here and now. Kim has combined the two.
When you sing you pray twice; and when you sing your own song you pray thrice. Kim's songs are her prayers. She gives us permission to acknowledge our pain in song, to acknowledge our love in song. She shares her heart and a healing. She lets us know that God is God, that God is Love; that Love is Love in all its incarnations. This is where she belongs."

She has had a huge influence on me in my understanding of blues and in my development as an artist.
I have come to a music career a little later in my life than many, and to the blues even later. But it has been a place of freedom for me and has opened me up in ways I wouldn't have anticipated.

And, it is especially interesting for me and those around me because, like some others who have come before me, I am an ordained minister.

Obviously, there are many who have danced between the worlds of church gospel and blues, and I wouldn't even begin to compare myself to some of those amazing musicians: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Rev. Gary Davis, and Blind Willie Johnson among others. Perhaps the only thing I want to say is that singing/writing blues in addition to gospel that shows the struggle of life is an authentic expression of who I am. And authenticity, I believe, is sacred.

So, I hope you listen and I hope you enjoy!

Kim
