Last month, the Black Diamond Heavies released their new record, Every Damn Time, on Alive Records.
Now, if you don't know the Heavies, they are a Nashville duo who describe themselves as follows:
\r\nThe Black Diamond Heavies hail from the Southern States of America, but currently live as "vagrants/citizens of the world." Their music is urgent, raw, and full of ass-shaking soul. The live show has been described as both "Pentecostal"and"Demon-Possessed". Most of the material is original, although covers are sometimes thrown in as tribute to gods, generals, heroes, and vampires such as John Lee Hooker, T-Model Ford, Muddy Waters, Lou Reed and Tom Waits. The Heavies continuously gain momentum on their quest to unleash the punk-ass blues on the world.
That's right. A punk blues duo, with John Wesley Myers manning the Fender Rhodes organ, and Van Campbell beating the hell out of the skins. The record itself is a mighty piece of work...recorded live to tape, the raw, huge sound of this record makes you feel like you're listening to a tape of one of their awesome live gigs.
\r\nDon't let the big sound scare you. These guys are steeped in the blues, and their songs range from the truly soulful to blues infected punk that will force the devil from your soul. Or maybe it will push him right back in...
\r\nYou only have a few more dates in the next couple of weeks to catch them here in the states...and then it's off to the UK and France, with stints at the famous Cockroach Club in Peterborough with The Surgens (see my post on these guys a couple of weeks ago), and of course, at the Spitz, as part of the festival of the blues.
