Behind the scenes at the 651 ARTS Mississippi Delta Heritage Project, things are cooking.
We’re working long days and nights to bring the blues back to Brooklyn. I’ll be spending hours posting flyers and handing out promo materials to NYC hotspots like Terra Blues and Other Music. Last night was the premier of Delta Rising, a new performance piece composed of narratives from Delta natives. It went off with a bang. Two sold out shows and the venue had a warm feeling to it – everyone was fascinated by the wealth of stories shared from the treasure chest of Delta life.
Here on staff, we’re starting to appreciate the complications of current life in the Delta – the lack of agricultural jobs and the importance of culture and tourism as the partial foundation for new economic growth. We can’t wait to learn more as more artists arrive, including T-Model Ford, Sharde Thomas and Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, and Robert Belfour. Beyond the music performances (all info is here:
www.651arts.org), we’re also looking forward to the harmonica and washboard educations workshops happening throughout our series. Email

See you at the shows!
