This essay’s title is inspired by the lyrics of Peg Leg Howell’s “Rock and Gravel Blues” when he sings:

“Let’s go to the river and sit down

Etta James - One of the best is gone

I'm very saddened to hear about the death of Etta James. What a talent and one of the mainstays of Chess Records. Not many songs are more moving than her "At Last" and not many are hotter than "Tell Mama".

We'll miss her greatly.
