Profile Information

About Me:
I am a musician - performer and composer (ASCAP). I started piano when I was 8, clarinet when I was 12, and guitar and composing when I was 15 in 1967. I am now the grand old age of 56, and am concentrating on Blues guitar. I was recently lead guitarist of a reformed 60's blues-rock band on Long Island.

I was originally interested in becoming a concert pianist, and I studied for several years with Gates Wray, one of the few students of Vladimir Horowitz, who I consider to be the greatest pianist of the 20th century.

I was a music major in college in the early 1970's (Colby College in Waterville, Maine), where I had the privilege of studying composition under Peter Re, who himself had studied under the great composer Paul Hindemith, and got my BA in music in 1974 concentrating in composition. I took a month of intensive independent study in classical guitar in my senior year from Elliot Fisk (a student of Andres Segovia), and I received honors in it. I taught classical and folk guitar at Colby in 1975 as an independent study course.

Played in several rock groups in High School and College. However, mostly I played folk music - inspired by Dylan, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Donovan, Melanie (who I grew up across the street from), as well as more pop oriented artists, especially the Beatles - most especially John Lennon, plus Cream (Eric Clapton is still someone I catch all the concerts of I can), The Stones, and the general music and culture of the mid-late 60's and early 70's. 1967 was the peak for me.

I was invited into a reformed 60's rock/blues group as Lead Guitarist and singer in 2006. I also have a small home "studio" where I will continue to record both audio and video clips of my Blues guitar playing and improvisation.
Favorite Artists and Bands
Eric Clapton (Cream - Derek & Dominoes), SRV, Buddy Guy, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The 3 Kings (BB, Albert and Freddie), Melanie, Donovan. Any of the great Blues and Folk artists and groups.

Tears in Heaven : instrumental on electric guitar

This is an instrumental version of Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton played on electric guitar by me - but played finger style with an acoustic tone. I played this over a minimal rhythmic backing track on my Clapton signature strat named GOLDIE. I learned it because of the immiment passing of my wife's 106 year old grandmother - and at the request of the family, played it (quietly) at her bedside in hospice two days before she finally did pass on peacefully.

My dear father, at age 91, also passed away a littie over 3 months ago (8-30-08) due to pneumonia acquired from a fall requirng surgery due to Parkinson's, so I have been playing this a lot again, as I do believe he can hear and feel it in the better place he is now. My 97 years old Mother is grieving, but maybe can take a little solace in this music.

Thank you as well for your steadfast friendship and positive commentary that I really appreciate, and I congratulate you and your band for the success you've attained and I'll buy the first copy the CD to come out of your current recording sessions - as long as it's autographed by you!!

That is an incredible picture, and I'm certain it was there for you to capture - both into your camera and into your heart and soul. The Creator is happy when "his" creations are wonderful ones - and that is certainly the case with you my friend!

There are only possibilities and each moment is a slice of Heaven, and you've learned to stack up those slices into a life full of wonder that you share with your fantastic music and friendship!

And I've been listening more to your music and the Bluesmates — and that's some GREAT BLUES you've got going there!! It's an honor to know a true pro like you!

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours - and much more great Blues to come. :)

Every day we are jumping from one task to another – looking at the watch as a guide. No wonder heart attack is one of the main causes to death. We forget to pause, to look around and to enjoy friendship and family. The world is beautiful – you only have to allow yourself to see it - to experience it. Look at the watch, painted by Jette – given the title “Time is relative”.

Hey James, wishing you a fantastic weekend. Look at this video and be prepared. When it looks like it's going in the right direction remember to change from Rock'n Roll to real slow blues. Enjoy. Take care my friend. Blues'on. Grandpa_Erik

Jim S - glad to meet you ... again. I just joined, and saw your pix on the rotating wall on the main page and said "Hold on there - I recognize this fine fellow from 12bar!" Greetings!

James,

Thanks for the nice words about my song, "Hard Times". I had some hard times myself a while back so I took early retirement from my computer business to spend time with my family and I have never regretted it. I haven't had much money since then but that hasn't made my life any less enjoyable or fulfilling. Music is healing. Playing or listening. I'm glad my funny little hobo song could reach out to you.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry
