Butler May: was he the real Father of the Blues?

Acknowledgements:I sincerely thank Kevin Nutt of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, and the Alabama Folklife Association for putting at my disposal the writings of Doug Seroff and Lynn Abbott, published in: “Tributaries, Journal of the Alabama Folklife Association”, 2002, Joey Brackner editor. It has to be mentioned, in addition, that the main sources exploited by Seroff and Abbott come from “The Indianapolis Freeman”, a weekly newspaper (1884-1927) which reported on the black…See More

Blues and Black folk music shine on the American Titanic

Acknowledgments:I thank Robert Sacré and Alan Balfour for putting at my disposal earlier publications. Ray Templeton, Paul Petraitis and John Clarke kindly pointed me to interesting song recordings.—————————————————————-When I told my 12 year young daughter, Blijke, after having watched the Cameron block buster on the Titanic, that I intended to write an essay on the depiction of this disaster in the African-American folk and blues, she answered with a smile that I could only read as: “Dad, you…See More

Toasting to the Blues and Rap

I admit straight away that, while the blues touch my deepest emotions, rap music does not strike a chord in me. Having reached the age where retirement is no longer an abstract notion, I can hide behind the (cheap, and probably invalid) excuse of a generational argument to justify my lack of interest too in this primary ingredient of hip-hop culture. It offers some comfort to know that I am not alone in this differential liking and interest. A 2008 study exploiting data on the co-occurrence of…See More

“Ragtime Texas”: a hobo songster goin’ up the country… A tribute to Henry Thomas

In 1993, the Scottish pop band Deacon Blue issued their CD “Whatever You Say, Say Nothing” that contained as its sixth track : “Last night I dreamed of Henry Thomas”. None of us will probably ever have dreamed of Henry Thomas. How could we? We hardly have an idea how Henry Thomas looked like. All we have, is a very impressionistic “print” of which we are not even sure whether it is originally a photo. Mack McCormick, to whom we owe everything we know about Henry Thomas, speaks of him as a great…See More
