CounterCulture primarily came about as an attempt to create a space channelised towards encouraging and showcasing alternative ideas. Offering a restored old factory converted into a restaurant surrounded by almond, chikoo, mango and coconut trees, it is located in a quaint part of Bangalore suburbs called Mahadevpura, close to ITPL in the industrial belt of WhiteField. In a city that is undergoing more makeovers than the residents can keep pace with, CounterCulture hopes to impart a faint whiff of the quintessentially Bangalorean relaxed open spaces, where the greenery serves as the canvas for theme-based gourmet fare while still allowing guests to swing back into their own preferred comfort zones.

A humble restaurant by design, it proposes to highlight music, art and culture by inviting renowned as well as indie artists who can display their work or conduct workshops, amongst much else. We intend to make it a participative platform for an extremely diverse array of experiences and activities, where everyone is granted the space to showcase their individual pursuits – however modest or ambitious in scale. This can include anything from poetry readings on Ghalib’s birthday to all-India tattoo artist meets and documentary screenings to live jazz performances.

CounterCulture attempts to honour the natural bounty with dishes comprised of the freshest locally-sourced sustainable ingredients whenever possible. For this, we have Chef Sanjiv Kumar on board with 20 years of culinary experience to weave creative dishes while we fuse the menu with artistic endeavours. For instance, inside the high-ceilinged restaurant building, Thai, Continental and several theme-based cuisines will be served to the tunes of John Coltrane, Chuck Berry and more. One can sip a quiet half with grills in our al fresco area, or let the soulful blues flow in the simplistic indoors while picking from Turkish spreads or homemade South Indian creations. Or go for the full whammy: Sunday brunch with Terry Gilliam short movies and live stand-up comedy acts. Cooking workshops, music album launches, revival of folk art forms such as puppetry and private space for meetings are all on the cards. But flummery aside, we hope to make this a niche space that appeals to anyone with a good appetite and a penchant for creativity and open spaces.
