- About Me:
- Marty "Big Dog" Mercer, arrived on the Chicago music scene in February of 2000. Hailing from Wisconsin where he was a sideman for a touring blues band the "Big Dog" needed room to stretch out musically. As he made Chicago, the "home of the Blues", his new turf he started showing his face at the local jams where, after playing, was donned the moniker "Big Dog" by local blues musicians. His versatile styling and approach to the guitar is evident in every performance. Attacking the neck of his self created instruments with his slide is signature to this emerging Bluesman.
"Big Dog" has begun a journey of proving his southpaw approach to his blues are worthy of notice and respect. Since he has become a mainstay in the Chicago Suburbs he has shared the billing with such acts as: The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Billy Branch, L.V.Banks, Toronzo Cannon ,Ronnie Baker Brooks , Mud Morganfield (Muddy Waters Jr.), & Jimmy Warren, just to name a few.
In legendary fashion this "Big Dog" shows his "Big" heart by donating his time to several charities & fundraising events including "Blues for kids' sake" cd for the Big Brothers & Big Sisters Foundation.
In April 2007, he was crowned Joliet Illinois "King of the Blues" at the Joliet Guitar Center.
He has many influences that he calls upon to make his own style of music that has been called many things."Bluesbilly" & "Swamp Boogie" are some.
His soulful vocals that sometimes growl, his aggressive slide playing, & heartfelt string bends make him unlike any other bluesmen. The "Big Dog" will be releasing his debut CD "Attack of the SouthPaw" on Electro Glide Records in Sept. 2010.
