Currently performing with my own band featuring Perry Welsh. Perry played harp for Elvin Bishop back in the early days.
I wanted to play guitar from as far back as I can remember. I would beg my grandparents to buy me a toy guitar every time they visited relatives in Texas, near the Mexico border. My father purchased a used single pickup Magnatone guitar for me when I was 11, along with an early 50's Champ Amp but the guitar wasn't properly set up and nearly impossible to play, so not much progress was made. The desire to play never diminished, but it would be 5 years before I had the focus and funds to purchase a decent instrument.
The first blues LP I bought was "BB King Live at the Regal" in the early 70's. Before that I listened to Cream, Johnny Winter, Rory Gallagher, and various blues-rock acts, but never consciously tried to emulate them, as I was playing bass in a blues based band at the time. I discovered Albert King in '75 just after I took up the guitar seriously, and listened to BB, T-Bone, and Roy Buchanan as my guitar style developed. Roy Buchanan was the inspiration behind my switching to to the guitar. I went to see Roy with the band at a small club in Hollywood, CA in early '74 and we sat about 15 ft from the stage. My jaw was on the table for the entire show. I had no idea that such emotion could be extracted from the electric guitar. It was an amazing night for me and I carry Roy in my heart (even If I don't play like him) every time I perform.
