Johnny's Roots Album releases in 5 weeks!
Check it out at www.johnnywinter.net
Take the buy it here link to Amazon and listen to the sound clips. It's GREAT!
Just picked up my copy of Live Bootleg 7 today (5 days ahead of release date). I ordered it last week at my local music store. They sold it to me three dollars below list price. Pretty nice for a new release. If you live in the Detroit, Michigan, area visit Dearborn Music--it's a GREAT music store.
First, I'll say this is a great CD. I love the variety. I am really dissapointed in the packaging and level of detail. Check out some of Bob Dylan's offical bootleg releases--they are first class (well, except for not getting the split between tracks in the right spot with song intros trailing on the last track, but the booklets are fantastic), tell you about each song and where it is from, etc. These Johnny Winter live bootlegs are mystery packages, with no information on when the music was recorded. Sound quality seems pretty good for most tracks (that is rated only from listening on earbuds though). Track 1 is about 20 seconds and should have been part attached at the beginning of Track 2.
Track 2 is as good as any live version of Don't Take Advantage of Me, which is to say is GREAT! I have several live versions and I don't recognize this on.
Track 3, Mean Mistreater is really cool, it is slow like the Woodstock Mean Mistreater ("Baby You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now") but more closely follows the words of the Mean Mistreater on the Black Album. No harmonica, but Johnny's guitar is hauntingly beautiful. You don't always get Johnny playing slower and he does a wonderful job, and there are some erie sounds later in the track that to me sound like slide work on one string maybe.
Track 4 is Freddy King's Hideaway (thought they credit Johnny on the package), and in fact is from the bootleg Parker's Place (Live Bootleg 2 has two from Parkers Place also). Oddly, the one o Parker's place is 2 minutes longer, so they must have cut it. Either way it sounds GREAT.
Track 5 is really nice and I don't recall having this song in a live version, except maybe when Johnny was playing with Muddy Waters.
Track 6. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye is a beautiful and unique rendition compared to any other live versions of that song that I have. This one is kind of like the other Live Bootleg where Johnny did Blue Mood (an acoustic song) with electric guitar. And to my ear (I don't claim a great ear), it sounds like Edgar must be doing some work on an harpsichord in the background. That or Johnny is doing something pretty strange with his guitar.
Track 7, is the stinker sound quality wise, but it is to my best estimation, from the Turner Shannon days, and so a gem in that respect. It is the same one as is found on the semi-legitimate CD titled, Houston Sessions, but without the nice intro. The intro on Houston Sessions goes, "The next group that's coming out is one which is really unique because young Johnny Winter, a gentleman who came up from Texas, and really started something all his own."
Anyway, this is a great CD. Buy it. You won't be dissappointed.
