According to the latest breaking unemployment figures, another 467,000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed in June. This brings the unemployment figures to the highest they have been in 26 years. Workers also saw weekly wages fall, suggesting that Americans have little appetite for spending.

ReverbNation recently conducted a survey of artists in an attempt to learn how the downturn was affecting their everyday lives across a variety of factors. The general perception is that this downturn in the economy has affected them in a negative way with many respondents citing that they are touring less, receiving less for the gigs that they are playing, they are being asked to split a larger percentage of the proceeds of their merchandise tables with venue owners,

Here is the results of that survey as it appeared on Hypebot:

Well, with the business model I'm using, I'm doing fairly well for a blues player I guess. I'm workin' my a** off to do it. I have more gigs but they are lower paying than last year. They're longer too. Noon to 7pm on Monday, that'll give you some aches and pains but ya get hella chops too. The tips are down about 30-40% it seems.

I thought I was going to grow my show, band, speakers, lights etc. It's actually been shrinking. I use a guitar, mic, 60 watt guitar amp, and mixer and that's my whole rig (and I'm the whole band if anyone asks). The key has been to streamline my set to the bare bones and work with the clubs or restaurants to bring in more folks. Everyone is tight these days so it sort of works to go the opposite direction as others. Places that have good crowds don't need me. Clubs that are struggling can be very loyal to those who suffer through it with them. It's not about personal glorification, it's about doing good business as it currently stands. See a need, fill it. As a result, BUSINESS IS UP in the purely conventional American way!
