Would an American flag do? If so, I'd stick a flag up some porker's ass and throw it in the air to stop this insanity and stop this widespread abuse of musicians.
If you want to see how widespread this really is, search Facebook (for example). I came up with 261 different BOBs on Fecesbook alone. If this was ten bands who were not getting paid for a performance, that would be a total of 2600 bands (adjusted for winners.)
I say, treat every performance like a personal battle of the bands. Deserving musicians can always get paid one way or another.
These battles are cheap ways for promoters to get 10 very excited and hungry amateur bands to work their butt off. Then at the end of the night, they only have to pay one of them. A band that considers themselves worthy of "winning" should understand that the so-called prize is within their grasp anyway.
I'm waiting for the day that the venues come to understand the price of 'free' musicians. As if Karaoke hasn't done enough damage, half-assed entertainment is KILLING the scene.
I have to agree with this also Chad!! It is a cheap way for Club owner's and Promoter's to pay out less.
Karaoke, and the one man Hip Hop,and DJ show's killed the Pioneer Square Blues scene in Seattle,Wa. year's ago!! MHM
Cheaper yet is staging these competitions as rounds comprised of six to ten musicians leading to a Final, with the winning musician being forced until then to collect a dime in winnings. Then, rather than paying the "Winners" in full, they pay only after deducting expenses and then tiered to cover a first, second and third places.
There is even one group that stages these playoffs advancing the winners to yet another Battle of the Bands in which bands from all over the world compete twice to determine winners from each venue. These "winners" play yet a third time before an ultimate First, Second and Third place winner is announced. And then the winner is awarded things like a comic book subscription.
So let's see, if a band plays...these bands if they are lucky enough to advance to the final Finals, have had to play a total of five times for FREE and sometimes an additional time or two if they are part of some other promoter's showcase.
CHC, might want to check with some of those folks that walked away with the "comicbook subscriptions" if you a refering to what I think you are. Most of those winners are not on major labels and and touring worldwide.
As to the typical BOB's I agree with the sentiment of this page.
