I agree, absolutely, with you. See my reply to Dan Rogers about the T-Man (all of 8 years old !)
The blues that makes my big toe curl up is hip, rough, clever, funny, and it makes my butt move. I don't think the ability to play fast helps. I believe god gives me the sight to use this music to make my brothers and sisters feel good. Or to share our hardships. It's like a big audio hug!
There's lots of guitar players. Too many. Robert Cray is the last great in my mind. The next great one has to say something too. We don't need anymore smoke and mirrors.
To master the instrument gives the ability to master the language you wish to speak, eloquence has become a faux pas in this society of Simpsons from the white house on down! It is sad that mediocrity has so many adherents but then it seems to be true of the government so why not the governed.
Hug away, Bill, that hits the nail on the head for me, encompasses the whole blues family. And Robert Cray ? Yes. Only kicking myself I didn't get the ticket to see him next Wednesday.
Hi Jennie
I was Blessed to see Robert Cray 7-10 times from 1985-1991...What a Slick Player AND WHAT A GORGEOUS VOICE 4 THE BLUES=

For guitar driven blues,...Daniel Conti is my vote check him out at www.drawingback.com
Having had the pleasure of seeing Derek Trucks and his band play, many times now, I'd have to say, sure, Derek is a definite candidate for such. However, I feel that there are many many musicians who just haven't had the exposure, or be in the right place at the right time for someone to discover them. I am sure we'll never run out of incredibly talented blues guitarists to enjoy and listen to, and declare a "great" for that period of time in our lives. I give each and every musician a fair and serious listen when I am given the fortune of crossing paths with them. There sooooo many, and life, when placed into perspective, is not long enough for me to cover them all.
It's a toss-up between Cliff Schaumburg and Bruce Middle. THough for pure blues power, I'd lean towards Cliff.
AMEN!
I'm new to this site, this is my first post.
I'm a big Trucks fan. His Songlines Live DVD is a strong example of he and his band, they are my favorite of any kind out there now. They'll be here in Pittsburgh on 11/22 and I'm lookin' forward, it's been a coupla years since I've seen them. Personally I don't consider Trucks as a Blues guy because his music goes in so many different directions. Like everyone else, I have my personal definitions, but I always go by the motto If you think it's Blues, it's Blues. I won't disagree with anyone's tastes. I'm at places like this because I wanna learn more. Blues Rock is fine, there several folks from that area that I dig. My main tastes lean towards Chicago and the West Coast, but I listen to just about everything.

All that said, when it comes to who's next now I think that Kid Andersen(Charlie Musslewhite among others), Kirk Fletcher(Mannish Boys, Hollywood Blue Flames and formerly of The Fabulous Thunderbirds as well as Kim Wilson's Blues Revue) and Josh Stimmel(Kilborn Alley Band) are at the top of the class, off the top of my head. These guys can play it just about anyway they need to. They can sting hard or swing sweet as called for and bring a freshness to the table that makes one feel secure about the future of the music.

The established folks that get me goin' the most right now would include Nick Moss(his band the Flip Tops is my second favorite band of any kind right now), Lurrie Bell, who is perhaps the best there is right now if there is such a thing, Junior Watson, Anson Funderburgh and Cleveland Fats to name just a few.
It's good to be here, I look forward to getting to know everybody I'm not already familiar with.
