Greetings to all my friends, enemies, colleagues and blues lovers alike...
As some of you already know, I've been working with my friends Ted Drozdowski and Phil Reeves to present a night of LIVE BLUES at The Delancey Bar & Nightclub on Saturday, March 20. Please save the date and plan to join us for what promises to be an exciting night of live independent music.
We're very lucky to have Ted's Nashville-based band, Scissormen, headlining the show. Ted is one of the most exciting, engaging guitarists I know, and his brand of slide-heavy North Mississippi "hill country" blues -- served up in the finest spirit of of legends like (the late) R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough -- is best experienced in a live setting.
Ted is also an authoritative, top-shelf music writer, a friend of the late Robert Palmer and someone whose work has appeared throughout the world. With his musical endeavors deeply informed by his scholarship of American roots music, it's no surprise that Scissormen will be featured in an upcoming film, Big Shoes, by acclaimed documentarian Robert Mugge.
My friend Phil Reeves, meanwhile, plays guitar in Brooklyn-based trio Rockstellar, which will take the stage right before Scissormen. This exciting band blends old-school rock and blues sounds with stellar musicianship, all in service to some really kick-ass original songwriting. And like Ted, Phil is one talented, versatile guitarist: When he's not doing his thing with Rockstellar, you can find him playing in Soulshine, a fast-rising R&B outfit.
We'll have other acts on the bill, including my pal Emile Menasche', one of the most dedicated songwriters I know and (like me) a magazine refugee of the late-'90s Cherry Lane Music Company. Emile will kick things off with a bluesy acoustic set that will get going at 8 p.m. Emile will be followed to the stage by the Anodyne Blues Band.
If you're still reading at this point... well, thanks! We hope to see you at The Delancey on March 20. Please come out and support the blues, and please send this on to everyone you know!
Take it easy (but take it!),
